Did You Know?
The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953.

No formal peace treaty has ever been signed.
The DMZ is approximately 155 miles (250 km) long.
More than 16 countries sent combat forces under the United Nations Command during the Korean War.
The DMZ has become an important refuge for endangered wildlife because human access has been so limited.
REFLECTION
Standing at the DMZ was one of the most sobering moments of my trip. Looking across the border, I couldn’t help but think about the families still separated, the sacrifices made by countless individuals, and the hope that one day peace might replace division.
As educators, we have the responsibility to teach history not simply as a sequence of events, but as stories of real people whose lives continue to shape our world. My visit to the DMZ reminded me that understanding history is one of the first steps toward building a more peaceful future.
I hope to incorporate my learning into International Peace Day this coming fall.
