Fulbright Experience: Expanding Global Education
After completing an intensive 10-week graduate-level course of study in the fall, Shawnette Brown was thrilled to be selected for her Fulbright placement in Peru. As one of only eighty teachers nationwide chosen for this prestigious program, she is honored to represent global education and literacy.
Attending the Fulbright Symposium in February solidified the reality of this opportunity as she connected with fellow educators and gained deeper insights into the international education landscape. In June, she embarked on a 15-day immersive journey, which began with a 5-day collaborative program in Lima alongside her Fulbright cohort. Following this, she spent seven days working directly with a host teacher’s community in Tacna, Peru, engaging with students and teachers to exchange best practices. The experience will conclude with a final debrief in Lima, allowing her to reflect on the invaluable insights gained.
During her time in Peru, Shawnette fully immersed herself in the culture, people, and educational practices, learning firsthand about the Peruvian education system while collaborating with educators to foster meaningful exchange. This experience has been life-changing, fueling her passion for expanding her impact beyond the U.S. and exploring international opportunities to share her expertise. She credits Fulbright for opening doors to a global perspective and is eager to contribute to education on an international scale.
