What an incredible reunion to see everyone.
🌟 Fulbright Peru: Arrival Weekend Reflections (June 14–15)
On Saturday, June 14, many of us boarded flights to Lima, Peru to begin the 2024–2025 Fulbright Peru Field Experience. A few team members left earlier based on their home locations. By the time we all gathered at the airport, the excitement was unmistakable. The journey had officially begun.
When we met up, we received a special gift — a custom Fulbright Peru Crew sweatshirt designed by one of our amazing colleagues. It came out beautifully and was such a powerful symbol of our unity. Someone also surprised us with a Fulbright-themed keychain, which was equally thoughtful and beautifully made. Wearing our matching sweatshirts made it feel official and special. We were proud to represent Team Pennsylvania and the Fulbright family.
We arrived in Lima on Sunday, June 15, with most of us traveling through the night. Unfortunately, two people didn’t receive their luggage upon arrival, but seeing everyone together in person made it a joyful reunion nonetheless. As we drove to the hotel, I felt exhausted from the travel, but overwhelmingly thankful to be in Peru safe and sound.
Sunday was a gentle transition day. It gave us time to rest, reflect, and recover from the long flights. For me, it was especially significant because I had just finished the school year on Friday, June 13th. I flew out the very next day with no buffer in between. My body was tired, but my heart was full.
Later in the afternoon, we gathered for a delicious group lunch. Our teammate Nick, who has experience traveling in Peru and family connections here, graciously led a large group of us on a walking tour. We explored nearby parks, saw local establishments, and walked along the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Since it was Father’s Day, the streets were filled with Peruvian families enjoying the beautiful day together. It was a perfect way to be introduced to the heart of the community.
After the walk, we gathered for our official Fulbright orientation and first training session. We learned about the structure of the Peruvian education system, including how primary and secondary schools are organized. A special focus was placed on COAR schools and Peru’s national education priorities. We participated in an interactive activity using Post-it notes to reflect on major themes, questions, and personal takeaways about education in Peru.
The evening closed with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. I am already inspired by what lies ahead — visits to the U.S. Embassy, the Fulbright Commission, and local Peruvian schools. I am especially excited to engage in daily dialogue with this incredible group of educators who are passionate, curious, and committed to making a difference.
